Ancient wisdom at your fingertips

By R. Boucher

From ancient times, people have used divination tools, to seek out answers to questions. An oracle is such a tool that refers to a source that is known for (usually) giving wise advice. For hundreds of years, people have played with tarot cards as one method of seeking advice on certain matters. There are different decks of tarot cards. Check out your local bookstore and see which deck appeals to you. Each deck has slight variations on what each card means, and usually an instruction booklet accompanies the deck. You can do readings for yourself or another, looking at the provided manual to help you decipher what these oracle cards mean. If you really want to study tarot cards in more detail, there are many books on the subject. Find one that pops out at you, and seems easy to read.

If tarot cards, do not appeal to you, there are many other kinds of oracles available for you. An ancient Chinese divination tool called the I Ching is another popular source that people consult when they need some outside words of wisdom. Oracle cards are another means of spiritual contemplation on a matter of your choice; some card themes are angels, goddesses, and nature.

Whatever oracle device you use, the best way to start is to clear your head and center yourself with a few deep breaths. Think about the question you have in mind and picture it. Then ask your question of the oracle. Notice how you feel about the advice given. Does it ring a bell with? Do you hate it, but secretly agree? Does it make you cry? Do you disagree with parts of it? However you react, it's okay. This is a tool to help you gain insight into how you feel and what you want to do about it. Sometimes writing about the experience with the oracle helps you sort out the process.

Have fun and explore this traditional method.

P. S. Facade.com has lots of oracles to choose from in your quest for answers. Some of your choices include tarot, I Ching, coin flip, and runes (stones with ancient symbols on them). You can also check out sun-angel.com for more oracles.

 *   Meditate on That!

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.

~Eleanor Roosevelt

...If you want to see clearly the world you live in, you will need to be willing to see life from other people's perspectives, which may be quite different from your own. As you do so, remain open and nonjudgmental, keeping a sense of discovery, love, and adventure.

~Sanaya Roman

Listen within yourself and look into the infinitude of Space and Time. There can be heard the songs of the Constellations, the voices of the Numbers, and the harmonies of the Spheres.

~The Divine Pymander (BC 2500?-200 AD?)
